Most people know of the web as that small green 'E' symbol on their desktop, however there are actually different programs (called browsers) that you can use to navigate the web. They all do roughly the same thing - letting you view websites, but they do have quite a few differences.

Browsers like Safari and Firefox (both available for free on both Windows and Macs) have superior rendering over Internet Explorer, which means websites simply look better, so we recommend checking them out if you spend a lot of time on the web.

There is a new kid on the block though, Google have recently released their browser, Chrome. It's still in beta, meaning it isn't quite finished yet, and may have a few bugs, but it is shaping up well to contend with the leaders Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox.

So what's different about Chrome? Well it's fast, very fast... infact it's probably one of the fastest applications on Windows ever! It's also redundant, how many times have you been working on something like an email only to have your browser crash? Chrome solves this situation by running each tab as a separate process - so if one crashes - you don"t loose everything you are working on.

For those of you who tend to use different computers or just generally enjoy their privacy, there is a private mode which will prevent any data about your history being stored on a computer, a feature also found in Safari.

Phishing is becoming an increasingly popular means of getting hold of personal details, where websites are setup to look so similar to your bank account's website so that people are tricked into entering their details, because Google indexes so many websites for it's search engine, it has integrated a phishing filter into the browser so you will be warned as soon as they discover the website, now that's security you want on your side.

You may notice that your browser has two boxes in the bar along the top, one for search, and one for entering web addresses, well, since Google is the most popular search engine in the UK they have merged both of those boxes so as you type your website / search term it will suggest searches and websites from your history simultaneously, simplifying your whole experience.
