Windows Home Server
Having recently trialled Windows home server, we have discovered it is very useful for people at home with more than one machine, who want share data, keep backups, and have access to that data easily.
You can, hard drive space permitting, do complete backups of entire computer systems, so that in the event of your computer hard drive failing, you replace hard drive, insert the restore cd and it copies everything back to replacement hard drive.
Sharing of data is made super simple, so you can make your music, photos and other documents available to all your family, or your home office.
Permissions can be setup per user, so for instance, you want to share a family occasion set of photo's but not your music collection, you can do so without a hitch. It even allows remote access to your shares based on username, so you can even share with your relatives.
Windows home server will also monitor system health and security. It does this by interacting with Windows Security Centre, and monitors and warns of anti-virus, anti-spyware problems and out of date definitions. It also warns if a machine has failed a backup, so you can perform one manually.
Home Server is compatible with most versions of windows, and has a graphical user interface so you don't have to fiddle with anything too technical.
You may have heard that it doesn't work with Vista 64-bit, or that some people have lost data, however these issues have been fixed with a recently released Power Pack 1. There are also a lot of new add-ons which allow you to do other new things with the Home Server.
Take a look at the Microsoft website for more information.
